Huayu Communications Selects Altera’s Zero-Power CPLDs for Portable Handsets to Be Used During 2008 Summer Games

Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) announced that Shenzhen Huayu Communications Technology Company Limited has selected MAX IIZ CPLDs for use in its new P1200 portable handsets. Chosen for their ability to quickly and securely implement new features and capabilities while consuming minimal power and board space, Altera’s MAX IIZ CPLDs manage several peripherals in the P1200 handsets, including a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) reader, an Infrared Data Association (IRDA) sensor, a Bluetooth interface, and LED control. The P1200 handsets made their debut during the Hangzhou public transportation system’s bicycle project in May 2008, and in August, they will be used for ID identification, logistics, and public transportation services for the Beijing Summer Games.

“With the 2008 Olympics rapidly approaching, we were challenged with getting our handsets to market quickly with unique features that are not supported by off-the-shelf components,” said Wang Shao Wei, vice president of engineering at Shenzhen Huayu Communications Technology Company Limited. “Participating in the MAX IIZ early access program enabled us to leverage Altera’s first zero-power CPLDs as soon as they were released, and to meet our aggressive schedule with a cost-effective solution that minimizes our power consumption and increases design security.”
Leading-edge handset developers such as Huayu face the challenge of quickly adding new product features demanded by their customers. The lengthy development cycles of full-custom ASICs and the lack of flexibility of ASSPs have limited developers’ ability to meet this challenge. In addition, features based on off-the-shelf components like ASSPs are easily duplicated by other manufacturers, severely reducing the benefits that handset developers enjoy when they deliver first-to-market capabilities. The MAX IIZ family addresses these concerns by delivering the lowest power consumption of any CPLD in the market, the highest amount of user-customizable logic resources per board area and design security.
“As the world’s leading provider of CPLDs, Altera has a long history of reliably delivering custom logic products that enable product innovation,” said Luanne Schirrmeister, director of marketing, low-cost products, Altera Corporation. “Huayu’s P1200 is a great example of how forward-looking innovators in the portable handset industry are using MAX IIZ CPLDs to deliver differentiating features as soon as the market demands them.”

About MAX IIZ CPLDs

MAX IIZ devices are available in densities of 240 and 570 logic elements (LEs), with ultra-small MBGA packages as small as 5x5 mm, and as many as 160 I/Os. Their look-up table (LUT)-based architecture offers increased logic density and I/O count, thus allowing greater integration of functions and substantially reducing board space and power consumption while lowering overall system costs. The advanced features and capabilities of MAX IIZ CPLDs—such as user flash memory, an internal oscillator, cost optimization, high logic density, smaller packages and low power consumption—far surpass those of all traditional macrocell-based CPLDs.

INTEL'S LARGEST CHANNEL EVENT IN ASIA

intel’s LARGEST CHANNEL EVENT in ASia-pacific KICKS OFF WITH
45nm high-K technology at the heart of new offerings

Fresh opportunities for channel partners abound as Intel highlights growth in mobility platforms and unveils three new desktop motherboards

Kicking off Intel’s largest and most eagerly awaited annual channel conference in Asia Pacific, Navin Shenoy, Intel’s vice president, Sales and Marketing Group and general manager, Asia Pacific, highlighted a strong year of growth in the Asia Pacific channel. “The channel represents 35% of our business in Asia Pacific,” said Shenoy. “We want to give back to our customers by continuing to deliver the industry’s most compelling value propositions for the channel and helping our partners grow their businesses in 2008”, he said.

Two global channel chiefs also attended the event, namely Tom Rampone, vice president, Sales and Marketing Group and general manager, Channel Platforms Group, and Steve Dallman, vice president, Sales and Marketing Group and general manager, Reseller Channel Organization. Reinforcing Intel’s revolutionary 45nm High-K Transistor technology as the cornerstone of opportunity, the channel chiefs encouraged channel partners to embrace new technologies such as Intel’s latest mobile motherboards that extend its channel mobile initiative, and the newly introduced desktop motherboards.

Getting the Channel Ready for “Montevina”

Intel continues to actively work with multinational companies, local and regional OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), the channel and the PC ecosystem at large to promote notebook PC adoption. Energized by the spread of wireless technology and the growing popularity of mobile computing, Dallman rallied the channel to get ready for the next generation Intel Centrino 2 processor technology platform, previously codenamed Montevina and expected to be available in June 2008.

Saying that mobility is a huge opportunity for the channel, Dallman announced Rich Creek 2, the codename for a new mobile motherboard form factor specification that expands Intel’s ongoing efforts with the industry to develop interchangeable building blocks for notebook components. Rich Creek 2 products will be rolled out in a phased approach starting with select local integrators, local OEMs and original design manufacturers in several barebone and complete notebook configurations. More offerings are coming on-line toward the end of the year and in 2009, Intel says the goal is for the ingredient-based ecosystem to be mature enough to support a broad distribution model for all customers.

Intel as well as other industry partners will offer Intel Mobile Boards based on Rich Creek 2 that will launch time-to-market with the Intel Centrino 2 platform. Initially, Intel Mobile Boards will be available in a barebones configuration from ODM’s (original design manufacturer) and local integrators but not as a stand-alone product.

Launch of Three New Desktop Motherboards

Intel also launched three new desktop motherboards aimed at the extreme gamer, the mainstream multi-media user, and the entry-level PC user. These new motherboards respectively enable a number of innovative features for today’s PCs such as greater PC performance, clearer definition video and low-power technologies.

The three new Intel motherboards are the Intel Desktop Board DX48BT2 Extreme Series (formerly codenamed ‘Bone Trail 2’), the Intel Desktop Board DG35EC Classic Series (formerly codenamed ‘Eva Cove’), and the Intel Desktop Board D945GCLF Essential Series (formerly codenamed ‘Little Falls’). The Intel Desktop Board D945GCLF will use the new Intel Atom processor and will be available towards the second half of the year.

The Heart of a New Generation of Mobile Internet Devices, and More

Story of Linux Solution

Linux solution

Linus Torvalds, a young student had an interest on Minix, a small UNIX system and developed a system that exceeds this Minix standard from the University of Helsinki in Finland. He began his work in 1991 when he released version 0.02 and worked steadily until 1994 when version 1.0 of the Linux Kernel was released. The kernel, at the heart of all Linux systems, is developed and released under the GNU General Public License and its source code is freely available to everyone. It is this kernel that forms the base around which a Linux Operating system is developed. Thus Linux refers to any Unix-like computer operating system which uses the Linux kernel

Software infrastructure freedom offered by Linux

Security and stability

A Linux based distribution offers a choice of user interfaces with different looks, different level of customizability, different options etc. Users have the option to customise the way they want. Linux also offers a multiuser solution; many users could share a single computer by keeping their own settings and data completely isolated from the other users of the computer. The security and stability is very high in this Linux solution, no spyware or viruses can attack its top notch security by built-in firewalls.

Linux the free Unix-type operating system created developed under the GNU General Public License the source code for the Linux is freely distributed, apart from this Linux's functionality, adaptability and healthiness, that has made it the main alternative for proprietary Unix and Microsoft operating systems. There are lot of companies and organizations and an equal number of individuals that have released their own versions of operating systems based on the Linux kernel. Linux seems like both the cheapest and most secure option for server deployment.

Linux have the full freedom

Linux's possibility was largely unaware at its beginning stage, dismissed it as a computer hobbyist project, unsuitable for the general public's computing needs. Through the efforts of developers of desktop management systems such as KDE and GNOME, office suit project OpenOffice.org and the Mozilla web browser project, there are now a wide range of applications that run on Linux and it can be used by anyone regardless of their knowledge of computers. Knoppix, the live CD version can download Linux. It comes with everything that needs to carry out day-to-day tasks on the computer and it needs no installation. It will run from a CD in a computer capable of booting from the CD drive. For continue using, a variety of versions or "distributions” of Linux are there to install, configure and use.

Linux has been adopted worldwide primarily as a server platform on the second decade of its existence. It is used as a home and office desktop operating system and the operating system can also be incorporated directly into microchips in a process called "embedding" and is increasingly being used this way in appliances and devices.

RedHat

In 1993 Bob Young incorporated the ACC Corporation, a catalog business that sold Linux and UNIX software accessories and in 1994 Marc Ewing created his own version of Linux, which he named Red Hat Linux. Young bought Ewing's business in 1995, and the two merged to become Red Hat Software with Young serving as CEO.

In February 2000, InfoWorld awarded Red Hat with its fourth consecutive “Operating System Product of the Year” award for Red Hat Linux 6.1. In 2001 it acquires Planning Technologies, Inc, and in 2004 AOL's iPlanet directory and certificate server software.

The 2002 March Red Hat introduced the first enterprise-class Linux operating system, Red Hat Advanced Server, later named Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Dell, IBM, HP and the Oracle Corporation announced their support of the platform.

On March 15, 2007 Red Hat released Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, and in June, they acquired Mobicents.

Red Hat, one of the larger and more recognized companies dedicated to open source and the major distributor of the Linux operating system. Red Hat was founded in 1995 and has its corporate headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina with satellite offices worldwide.

RedHat Company is branded for its enterprise-class operating system, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and more recently through the acquisition of open source enterprise middleware vendor JBoss. Red Hat provides operating system platforms along with middleware, applications, and management solutions, as well as support, training, and consulting services. Red Hat solutions have been embraced across a wide variety of industries and sectors. Customers can count on Red Hat expertise and support at every step from deployment to development to implementation and management.

Red Hat offers innovative open source technology to the small and medium business.

It also encompasses a keen understanding of customer goals and the stability of a true enterprise-class platform. The robust services and support and the broad ecosystem of partners are also the other several benefits of RedHat.

An attractive software option for SMBs

Linux Solution offers one big benefit to the SMBs of cost savings. It can prove an attractive proposition for cost-conscious SMBs that it have no licensing or upgrade costs and not to mention any initial software purchase. Linux solution also allows more flexibility in long-term planning, as it frees companies from vendor lock-in and the forced upgrades and licensing issues that can crop up. Linux servers can be hardened and secured by existing staff, because much of the work needed is routine server and hardware maintenance.

From the desktop to the datacenter, the security, stability, and reliability of the tested Red Hat enterprise solutions deliver unbeatable value to small and medium sized businesses. Small and medium businesses have been focused on their infrastructure and they are looking for ways to reduce costs, improve vendor independence, get away from vendor lock-in, improve security, and they've been looking at server consolidation on servers such as the zSeries, iSeries, pSeries and xSeries. More SMB type Linux applications, enabling larger databases.

Linux reduces the total cost of ownership and provides for independence and choice.

Linux the number-one UNIX operating system is well on its way to becoming the number-one server operating system.

Independent software vendors have created more than 4,200 Linux-based applications using IBM software, and there are more than 33,000 Windows and Intel developers working with IBM software to build applications that run on Linux. Twenty-five countries have produced 66 open-source legislative proposals. Thus Linux is really a hot topic for small and medium businesses.

Areas they have been using Linux in include Web infrastructure such as firewalls and Web servers, and Bynari to replace Microsoft Exchange for enterprise messaging and e-mail servers, and Samba for print and file servers. In the area of risk analysis and financial modeling, several financial institutions are leveraging Linux and Linux clusters to cost effectively execute proprietary rating and risk algorithms.
IBM's Linux Technology Center provides more than 250 engineers worldwide who work full time on Linux as a part of the open source community.

Offers greater option and independence

Customers want vendor independence and choice, and that has created a demand for alternatives and they do not like being locked in by software licensing. Thus Linux offers a great option and independence to the customers,
And now, Lotus Domino Web Access for basic e-mail, calendaring and instant messaging; and Lotus Workplace for high-value, component-based collaboration will becoming available on Linux, enabling SMB to deploy a pure Linux solution, wall-to-wall, using Mozilla web browsers on Linux.
These Lotus Linux products have been much anticipated, and expect great things from them. The opportunity for SMBs to harness the security, stability and value of Linux has never been greater. Windows still generally rules the desktop, Linux servers are probably still far away from the data centers.

Begin up of Linux

Lionel Pinto, the manager of Netsys Communications, Mangalore states that,” Nowadays customers are not much interested on Linux, they simply like to harmonize with XP. It’s mainly because they are not much aware of Linux Solution and its performance. Over the other software Linux have the prospect to increase the programming skills. Currently students are using Linux more because they use laptops and most of them are preloaded with Linux.” He adds, “It is begin up period of Linux and the XP is loosing the ground. The desktop and laptops are now coming preloaded with Vista and Linux, so normally the XP’s era is going to be end”.
